Optical Measurement of Injector Nozzles

Injector nozzles are critical components in fuel injection systems of diesel and gasoline engines, directly impacting engine efficiency, fuel consumption, and emissions. Their precise geometry ensures optimal fuel atomization and combustion. However, measuring these tiny, intricate features poses several challenges:

  • The small size of nozzle holes requires a high-resolution measurement solution.
  • A complete scan is essential to fully capture the geometry.
  • Contact-based methods risk damaging the delicate structures.

The solution: Optical, non-contact measurement

Using the optical coordinate measuring machine µCMM with a rotation unit, injector nozzles can be measured with high precision and without risk of damage. This approach ensures accuracy and repeatability while protecting delicate components.

Vertical Focus Probing technology enables optical lateral probing of surfaces greater than 90°, capturing even the most challenging geometries, such as injector nozzle holes.

The integrated metrology platform MetMaX streamlines this complex process into just four simple steps. By uploading CAD data and selecting the desired features, MetMaX fully automates the measurement process, eliminating the need for specialized metrology expertise.

Evaluated parameters with the optical µCMM:

  • Nozzle diameter
  • Taper ratio
  • Distance to shoulder
  • Spray angle
  • Nozzle hole edge condition
  • Sac geometry
